A poor follow-up by a different studio aired from 89-91. In fact, the popularity of the ads FOR the comics led to the miniseries in 83, another in 84, and then finally a full-fledged cartoon beginning in 85 to 86. Larry Hama absolutely deserves a large share of credit for the characterization development of the characters, the cartoon kind of followed that but was far more goofy without much continuity.

The comic survived both before and after the cartoon, so yes. But then Marvel suddenly had this contract with Hasbro on their hands, and Hama was the guy with the most military experience, so. Strangely enough, Larry Hama's original concept (before being drafted as essentially, a subcontractor for Hasbro) that he's been trying to pitch was for a modern-day "Howling Commandos" type unit, of which the son of Nick Fury would have been the team leader.
